Works in «Stone Cardboard»
|
| Aquest material permet de fer obres molt grans i també molt petites, ja que és un material que, després de seguir tot un llarg procès, dóna un producte de qualitat, el qual és perdurable i consistent. A Catalunya és un ofici arrelat des de fa molt i molt de temps, oferint un ampli ventall de peces com: Gegants i Nans; Carrosses, tant per a Reis/Epifania com per a Carnestoltes; motius d'adornament i decorats teatrals i per a envelats; titelles, nines, cavalls, capses i un llarg nombre d'altres coses.

This material can be used to create works of both very large and very small dimensions, since it is a material that, after undergoing a long process, gives a high-quality product which is solid and durable. This craft has been established In Catalonia for hundreds of years and has offered a wide range of artistic works, such as: Giants and Dwarfs; parade floats for the Magis of the Epiphany, as well as for Carnival (Mardi Gras); decorative themes of all kinds and theatrical settings; puppets, dolls, hobby-horses, coffers, caskets and countless other items.

| El procediment per a aconseguir una peça o una imatge és el següent: 1) Esculpim, amb fang, la imatge o figura desitjades; 2) Passem a treure el motlle amb guix escaiola; 3) Un cop que tenim el motlle ben sec, fem l'estampació del cartró; 4) Esperem fins que el cartró sigui completament sec, llavors el treiem del motlle; 5) Els últims tres pasos són la impermeabilització amb diferents tipus de coles naturals, el polit i, finalment, el pintat. |
The procedure for creating a piece or figure is the following: 1) Sculpture the desired piece or figure in modeler's clay; 2) Create a mould using escaiola, a special material made of plaster and glue; passem a treure el motlle amb escaiola, que és una pasta feta de guix i aiguacuit; 3) Once the mould is dry, the process of impressing the wetted «stone cardboard» into the mould is begun.(This material shares the qualities of both heavy paper and cardboard, thus resembling papier maché, but it is heavier and more durable); 4) After the «stone cardboard» dries, it is carefully extracted from the mould;; 5) The final three steps are water-proofing, removing the rough edges, and painting. |
| També es pot treballar el cartró sense treure el motlle de guix, estampant la figura de fang directament per l'exterior.

It is also posible to work the «stone cardboard» without making a plaster mould, configuring it directly onto the exterior of the clay model.

| Finalment, una altra manera de treballar és construint una carassa o esquelet el més lleuger possible i esculpir directament amb el cartró. Encara que el procès és molt més lent, permet de fer peces úniques i no repitibles.

Finally, another method of working «stone cardboard» is to make the skeleton or framework of a figure as light-weight as possible and then sculpt the material directly onto it. Although this process takes much longer, it permits the creation of works that are one-of-a-kind.
