RE: Okay, another stupid Jenn-question

Hi Jenn,

I have found thusly the information about ART on AOL which is where ART
comes from:

-----------

Maybe in this case, the ART files are specific to AOL users and are
unrecognized by most browsers except AOL browsers. This is why many non-AOL
users will find blank pages when they visit AOL sites, unless the webmasters
have used the more generic GIF and JPEG formats.

ART format from the World Wide Web

The ART format is one most often 'found' when one lifts an image from a WWW
site. Depending on how you have your AOL WWW Graphic Preferences set you may
be saving all files in the proprietary ART format. Currently the only ART
viewer is the AOL software itself.

To view or convert an ART file, from the AOL menu at screen top (online or
off)...

- Select FILE
- Select OPEN
- Browse to and select the file to be viewed.
- while viewing, select FILE and then SAVE AS to save to a different format.

To stop the saving of images in ART format in the future, from the menu at
AOL screen top select:
 MEMBERS
 SET PREFERENCES
 WWW
If COMPRESSED GRAPHICS is turned on, click on UNCOMPRESSED GRAPHICS. This
will cause images on the WWW to load slower (actually, at their normal
speed) but will allow you to save the files in their native formats.

It must be noted that 'lifting' imagery from a WWW site without
authorization for reuse violates federal copyright laws. ASK FIRST!

------------------------------

I hope this helps. I've never been able to find an ART viewer, although I
remember reading someplace of a recent image viewer that could see ART
files, but for the life of me, I can't remember who it was. I don't have any
ART files in my AOL directory to test anything on. Hope this helps/

Best Regards,
Steve

A friend sent me a file today, of type .ART which I have never heard of.
It won't open in photoshop, corel, or PSP. Anybody got a clue what I need
to open this sucker up with? :)
