— L'anglès generalment intercala l'article indefinit (a, an) entre half i un nom comptable singular. Exemples:
mitja hora, mig pollastre, mitja dotzena, mitja ampolla de vi
half an hour, half a chicken, half a dozen, half a bottle of wine
Excepcions: mitja lluna half moon, mig camí half way
— El gir català «núm. + mesura + i mig/mitja» es tradueix en anglès per «núm. + and a half + mesura». Exemples:
dues hores i mitja = two and a half hours (no: two hours and a half)
tres quilos i mig = three and a half kilos (no: three kilos and a half)
Excepció: una hora i mitja = an hour and a half
— Quan mig va davant un nom de ciutat, país, etc., l'anglès el tradueix per half of. Exemples:
mig Barcelona = half of Barcelona, mig Europa = half of Europe
— L'article del gir català «la meitat de» no es tradueix en anglès; a més, la presència o absència de la preposició of és generalment opcional si va seguit de l'article definit. Exemples:
la meitat dels homes = half (of) the men (no «The half of the men)
La meitat de vuit és quatre = Half of eight (no «The half of eight) is four.
Excepció: si el pronom half és modificat per un adjectiu cal emprar tant la preposició com l'article; exemples:
la primera meitat d'agost = the first half of August
la meitat més antiga del poble = the older half of the town
Nota: Quan el gir «mig + nom» equival a «la meitat de + article + nom» —p.e.: mig món = la meitat del món— l'anglès el tradueix per «half (of) the + nom» (half the world).
Per l'altra banda, quan el mot mig fa de pronom, es tradueix en anglès per middle —p.e.: al mig del camí in the middle of the road— o, si és sinònim de punt cèntric, per center (al mig de la ciutat in the center of the city). També es tradueix per middle el nom meitat quan vol dir punt equidistant dels extrems d'un període de temps (p.e.: a la meitat del curs in the middle of the school year). Més exemples:
al mig de la vorera = in the middle of the sidewalk
al mig de la rodona = at/in the center of the circle
al mig de tot = in the middle of everything / in the middle of it all
a la meitat del cicle = in the middle of the cycle
a la meitat del segle XIX = in the middle of the XIX century (XIX es pronuncia nineteenth.)
